Paychex (PAYX - Free Report) has reported an impressive first-quarter fiscal 2027, wherein earnings and revenues beat the Zacks Consensus Estimate.

The quarter benefited from higher revenue per client, stronger PEO worksite employee growth and increased PEO insurance volumes. PEO and Insurance Solutions remained the standout growth area, while the adjusted operating margin also expanded from the year-ago period.

PAYX's Management Solutions Revenues Rise 4%

Management Solutions revenues increased 4% year over year to $1.21 billion in the fiscal first quarter. Growth was driven by higher revenues per client, reflecting price realization and greater product penetration.

The business remained Paychex's largest revenue contributor. Total service revenues advanced 6% year over year to $1.58 billion, supported by growth across Management Solutions and PEO and Insurance Solutions.

Paychex's PEO & Insurance Revenues Jump 12%

Professional Employer Organization and Insurance Solutions revenues climbed 12% year over year to $367.6 million. Growth primarily reflected an increase in average PEO worksite employees and higher PEO insurance volumes.

Interest on funds held for clients increased 5% year over year to $49.8 million, aided by higher average interest rates. The improvement provided another source of revenue growth, alongside the company's payroll, human resources and benefit offerings.

PAYX's Margin Expansion Supports Profit Growth

Total expenses increased 1% year over year to $1.01 billion, slower than revenue growth. Cost of service revenues rose 4% to $430.1 million, while selling, general and administrative expenses declined 1% to $581.2 million.

Operating income increased 14% to $619.2 million, lifting the operating margin to 38% from 35.2%. Adjusted operating income rose 9% to $684.7 million, while the adjusted operating margin improved to 42% from 40.7%.

Paychex's Net Income Rises as Acquisition Costs Ease

Net income advanced 12% year over year to $429.7 million, while GAAP earnings increased 14% to $1.21 per share. Adjusted net income grew 9% to $479.2 million.

Acquisition-related costs declined to $65.5 million from $84.8 million a year earlier. The latest-quarter amount included $56.9 million of amortization tied to the Paycor acquisition, $8.5 million of acquisition and integration compensation costs, and $0.1 million of other acquisition-related costs.

PAYX's Cash Flow & Balance Sheet Stay in Focus

Cash flow from operations declined 42.4% year over year to $413.5 million. Paychex paid out $424.1 million in dividends, or $1.19 per share, during the fiscal first quarter.

As of Aug. 31, 2026, cash, restricted cash and total corporate investments stood at $1 billion. Long-term borrowings, net of debt issuance costs, were $4.6 billion, while total assets were $15.66 billion.

Paychex Advances WISE AI Capabilities

PAYX continued to expand its WISE artificial intelligence platform and launched WISE Hire, an agentic recruiting solution. The company is embedding AI-enabled automation and insights across its human capital management platforms to support productivity and client outcomes.

Management also highlighted efforts to make WISE capabilities available within Microsoft business applications, wherein clients already work. The company views the broader deployment as part of its strategy to combine technology with advisory expertise across payroll, human resources and benefits.

PAYX Raises PEO & Client Funds Outlook

For fiscal 2027, Paychex continues to expect total revenue growth of 5-6% and Management Solutions revenue growth of 5-6%. It also maintained its adjusted operating margin forecast of about 44% and adjusted earnings growth outlook of 7-9%.

Management raised its PEO and Insurance Solutions revenue growth forecast to 7-8% from 6-7%. Interest on funds held for clients is expected to be $200-$210 million, up from the prior mentioned $195-$205 million. The effective income tax rate forecast remains about 24%.
